A New Anti-Aging Remedy? Silk Protein Skincare Benefits and Haircare Advantages

Silk is not only one of the most noble and elegant fabrics but, according to dermatologists and experts, it also possesses characteristics that make it a powerful ally in slowing down skin ageing and hair weakening.

But how is it possible for a fabric to have anti-ageing properties?

Science explains it to us. Unlike other fibres such as cotton, silk, thanks to its smooth surface, reduces friction and rubbing when in contact with the skin, preventing the formation of facial creases which over time can turn into actual wrinkles. The same applies to hair wellbeing: during the night, hair glides over silk, maintaining shape, texture and any hairstyle without becoming a frizzy tangle to be dealt with in the mirror the next morning. This is explained by Dr Neal Schultz, a well-known New York dermatologist and author of the book It’s Not Just About Wrinkles, in which he clarifies that dissatisfaction with one’s skin is not caused solely by wrinkles, but also by structure and tone.

Moreover, according to Dr Schultz, the intrinsic characteristics of this fibre reduce the tendency to absorb moisture, consequently keeping skin and hair fresh and hydrated, to the benefit of those who suffer from dry skin or acne and inflammation. Moisture absorbed by pillows can in fact attract allergens and bacteria that are harmful to sensitive or fragile skin. It is precisely within this context that silk protein skincare benefits are gaining increasing attention, as they are being extensively studied and valued for their ability to help maintain hydration and support the skin barrier.

The British website Sheerluxe also explains that one of the greatest advantages linked to the use of silk pillowcases lies in their ability not to absorb products such as creams and oils (applied shortly before going to sleep), which can therefore continue to act undisturbed throughout the night.

According to Lexie Sachs, associate director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, silk fibre, by not retaining moisture, is able to play a thermoregulating role in contact with the skin, providing a pleasant sensation of coolness during the summer months and warmth in colder periods.

Silk sheets and pillowcases are certainly an excellent ally in combating the onset of wrinkles and in improving hydration, and therefore the wellbeing and appearance of the skin. Science also suggests, however, that in order to fight the signs of ageing it is useful to combine appropriate products and treatments. Silk does not contain nutrients but, thanks to its delicacy and its many properties, it can provide valuable support to the action of specific products applied to the skin and hair before going to sleep.

Sleeping on silk pillowcases is a widespread habit in many countries, especially in the United States, where the silk pillowcase has become an indispensable accessory for many. In our country, this product has also started to be discussed for some time now, thanks in part to Italian companies – to mention a few, such as Silkow – that have begun to promote a culture of wellbeing and self-care through the use of silk pillowcases.

Silk pillowcases and sheets will not miraculously make you younger, but they should be considered as valuable complements, capable of providing wellbeing and natural benefits for the care, beauty and health of skin and hair.
